JOURNALISM: Meeting a member of the greatest generation

Journalists are not known for their humility but sometimes we write about, and get to know, very special people during the course of our job – like war veteran Harry Launder from Swansea.

Over the years I have written many stories about Harry, who as a young man endured the horrors of the bloody Monte Cassino campaign in Italy. He was always modest but frank about what he had done, and interviewing him was a humbling experience.

Harry had been ill for some time, and his recent passing ends a precious link to what is deservedly called “the greatest generation”.

Thank you for sharing your stories with me Harry – it was a privilege to have know you.
